The rpm rating of this drive doesn't seem to be listed anywhere. Not on the box, not in the manual, not online, not even on Western Digital's website. I even called them but they were evasive, insisting that an external drive's rpm was not an important factor and that they didn't have that information anyway.

Finally I got an answer and, according to the supervisor, it is 7200 rpm. However, understandably, I would still like to verify this before I begin using the device. I've hooked it up to my MacBook but System Profiler doesn't list the rpm rating in the drive's specs. I'd pry it open to check the manufacturer label, but that would obviously void the warranty. Any ideas?

Yes opening the case will void warranty, of course. However, most likely the drive inside is a Green Drive. I have opened MANY of the 1TB Mybooks, and they were all Green Drives. The bare drives in the 2TB range in the Green series are most popularly classified as 'Intellipower' on the spin speed. This is a technology used to vary rpm and read speed for best performance to power consumption ratio. From the WD site on intellipower:

A fine-tuned balance of spin speed, transfer rate, and caching algorithms designed to deliver both significant power savings and solid performance. Additionally, WD Caviar Green drives consume less current during startup allowing lower peak loads on systems as they are booted.

I did find a listing for a WD20EARX bare drive, which is one of the 2TB Green drives, and it lists 7200 RPM. So it seems there is mixed information out there, though there is a chance it is 7200 RPM. Take it as you may.

Use something like Argus Monitor, which can access SMART drive attributes of a USB-connected hard drive. It will list the model number of the hard disk inside the USB enclosure. Look that model number up on WD web site, read the specs and you'll know the RPM speed.

Please note that the model number of the hard disk inside has nothing to do with the model number of the enclosure. Moreover, I wouldn't be surprised if same enclosure has different model hard disks inside depending on manufacturing date, factory, etc. In order to find the speed of the disk, you need the model number of the disk, not the enclosure.

In this previous article I describe how to backup your computer using Apple’s Time Machine and an external hard drive. Here’s how to do it using a network hard drive:

Step 1. Throw out your My Book Live.

Step 2. Go and buy an Apple Time Capsule

Step 3. Turn on Time-Machine.

I kid you not! I am sorry if anyone followed these instructions below. The My Book Live has been more trouble than it’s worth.

1. The drive stopped working in under 1 year.

2. After many calls to Western Digital they still havn’t provided a warranty replacement.

3. They use some weird custom drive format that can’t be read by OSX or Ubuntu or Windows, so you cna’t get the data off your backup if it crashes.

I’ll leave this article below for your information, but DON’T TO IT!!!

It’s worth paying more and using Apple’s time capsule for peace of mind and better support should something go wrong, plus it’s easier to set up.

Time Machine is a piece of Apple software, but you need to have some hardware for it to back up onto. One option is external firewire or USB hard drive – a good option if you only have one computer. A second option is to run it on a networked external storage device. That means that it plugs into your network, via an ethernet cable, and any Macintosh on your network can backup to it. This is how Apple’s ‘ Time Capsule’ works. It’s a great option if you have more than one Macintosh in your house. There are non-Apple solutions available – this article explains how to set up Apple’s Time Machine on a Western Digital My Book Live.

1. Buy a My Book Live. I picked up a 2 Tetrabyte one up for $221 from amazon.com*, shipped to Australia for $317 – compare that to Apple’s Time Capsule at $649, there’s quite a difference. Apple sell the Western Digital MyBook on their website, but not the networked MyBook Live.

2. Assuming you already have a network – some kind of a router connected to the Internet and connected to your home computers – plug the ethernet cable from the My Book Life into your router, then plug the power adapter in. At this stage the My-book live that I had needed firmware updates and this took a bit of fiddling. I won’t explain it here, but basically I needed to login and tell it to upgrade it’s firmware automatically from the web. The manual firmware upgrade did not work.

3. Go to System Preferences/ Time Machine, or use the menu Go/Applications/Time Machine

Click ‘Select Disk…’

4. There should be a disc that automatically appears that says on “MyBookLive – backup” – select this disc and click ‘Use for Backup’.

When it asks you for a password, select the ‘Guest’ option.

5. Make sure the time machine slider is set to ‘On’ and Time Machine will automatically backup your machine every hour, every day and every week.

6. Go to System Preferences, Spotlight, and click on the ‘Privacy’ tab. Click the plus button and select The My Book Live is a great solution because it comes ready to work with Time Machine out of the box. All you have to do is plug it into your ethernet router and your computer will find it as easily as an external hard drive.

Selecting MyBookLive in the Spotlight Privacy Tab tells Spotlight to NOT to include your Backup in its search results otherwise you will see two of everything in every search – the original and the backup.
OS X should do this automatically – not include Time Machine results in Spotlight searches – but there have been reports of Time Machine results appearing in Spotlight searches so this is just a precaution to make sure it doesn’t happen.

I have this same set up and tried to restore from it yesterday and received a you do not have permission message (i am the administrator, owner and only user). I called Apple and was told that time machine would not now work with a non apple network drive and had to use either a USB or Firewire drive. I called Western Digital and they did not dispute the question, but offered to replace my new My Book Live with a My Book Studio LX. I do not understand why it would not work as i can easily see the drive and the contents of both the public folder and the backup that were taken. Any ideas?

I have the same set up problem too – trying to run Time Machine on MyBook Live and not working at all. I’m also backing up another laptop (PC) onto the NAS and it seems to work ok. Just seems that TM isn’t working properly. Would love to hear ideas on this too!

The Problem is caused by Lion.

ReplyJesper Sørensensays:November 24, 2011 at 10:37 am

It´s not just Lion. I have Snow Leopard and it doesn´t work. Time Machine starts up but it never finishes. I´ve tried several times but never succeed to make a working Time Machine copy on the My Book Live

This is exactly what happens for me. Did you ever get it to work? It keeps saying “backup delayed, waiting to backup” after it has been backing up GBs for several minutes/an hour.

ReplyJay Ksays:November 28, 2011 at 6:23 am

I am also having the same problem, backing up my new imac (1 month old) with lion on to a WD mybooklive that I previously used to successfully back up 2 windows PCs running Vista (no probs). I was initially planning to reset the WD drive to factory settings and then try the time machie back up- my reasoning being that mac and windows back ups on same drive causes the problem. I then thought I might just call the mac support people! :-)

Time machine DOES work with non apple network drives, at least it works with MyBook Live. Make sure you have the latest software update on the MyBook Live – see the link in the comments above.

How long does the first back up take? I have about 80GB to back up and the indication is that it will take weeks to complete the first backup. I have simply connected the myBookLive to the router via ethernet and the macbook pro to the router via ethernet.
